130 years ago, in Davenport, Iowa Dr. D.D. Palmer gave the first modern chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard, a janitor working in his building who became deaf after hitting his head on a stairwell.
Dr. Palmer used simple logic to deduce that if the injury had caused the misalignment of the spine, and had the misalignment not been there before he was deaf, then he needed to correct this misalignment, or subluxation, as he called it.
It’s still amazing to think about the circumstances of that first adjustment. Dr. Palmer didn’t know it was going to work, Harvey had no one to ask if they would recommend this adjustment, and there wasn’t even an adjustment table; just a mere coffee table. However, with courage and determination the adjustment was a success, and Harvey had his hearing restored.
While subluxation may not cause every case of deafness, it’s still clear that healthy bodies need a healthy spine. And so, we remember Dr. Palmer and Harvey Lillard and their significant contribution as we continue to change the world, one spine at a time.
